How to calculate a tip

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100. For an $85.50 bill with an 18% tip, the tip is 85.50 × 18 ÷ 100 = $15.39. Add that to the bill for a total of 85.50 + 15.39 = $100.89.

To split the bill, divide the total by the number of people. Four people splitting $100.89 pay $25.22 each, which includes $3.85 of tip per person. Small rounding differences of a cent can appear when the split is not exact.

Restaurants and delivery apps usually calculate suggested tips on the pre-tax amount, but many people tip on the full total for simplicity. Enter whichever figure you prefer as the bill amount.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?

In the US, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is customary for table service, with 20% common for good service. Delivery, bar, and salon tipping norms vary, but 10–20% is typical.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Etiquette guides say the pre-tax amount is sufficient, since tax is not a service charge. Tipping on the post-tax total is a slightly more generous, and very common, choice.

How do I split a tip between several people?

Calculate the tip on the whole bill, add it to get the total, then divide the total by the number of people. This calculator does that and also shows each person's share of the tip alone.
