How to calculate a discount
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 — that's the amount you save. Then subtract the savings from the original price to get the sale price. As formulas: savings = price × discount ÷ 100, and sale price = price − savings.
For example, take an $80 jacket at 25% off. The savings are 80 × 25 ÷ 100 = $20, so the sale price is 80 − 20 = $60.
A handy shortcut: the sale price is the original price multiplied by (100 − discount) ÷ 100. At 25% off you pay 75% of the price, so 80 × 0.75 = $60 — the same answer in one step.
Frequently asked questions
How do I figure out a discount without a calculator?
Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place left, then scale it. On a $40 item, 10% is $4, so 30% off is 3 × $4 = $12, making the sale price $28.
How do stacked discounts work, like an extra 20% off a 30% sale?
They apply one after the other, not added together. A $100 item at 30% off is $70; an extra 20% off that is $56 — a 44% total discount, not 50%.
Is sales tax charged on the original price or the sale price?
In the US, sales tax is almost always charged on the discounted price you actually pay, so the discount also reduces the tax.
