How to convert a salary to an hourly rate

Divide the annual salary by the total number of hours you work in a year. Total hours equal your hours per week multiplied by the number of weeks you work per year. The formula is: hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year).

For example, a $60,000 salary at 40 hours per week for 52 weeks a year works out to 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours. Then $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 per hour.

If you take unpaid time off, lower the weeks worked. The same $60,000 over 50 weeks (2,000 hours) is $30.00 per hour, because you are earning the same pay for fewer hours.

Frequently asked questions

How many work hours are in a year?

A common full-time figure is 2,080 hours: 40 hours per week times 52 weeks. If you take unpaid weeks off, multiply your weekly hours by the actual number of weeks you work instead.

Should I use gross or net salary?

Use your gross (pre-tax) annual salary to get your gross hourly rate. Taxes and deductions vary by person and location, so this tool shows the rate before any withholding.

Does this account for overtime or bonuses?

No. It converts a flat annual salary into an equivalent hourly rate. Overtime pay, bonuses, and commissions are separate and would raise your effective earnings per hour.
