How overtime pay is calculated
Split your hours into regular hours (up to the threshold, usually 40 per week) and overtime hours (everything above it). Regular pay is your hourly rate times regular hours. Overtime pay is your hourly rate times the overtime multiplier (typically 1.5) times overtime hours.
Example: at $20/hour you work 46 hours with a 40-hour threshold and a 1.5x multiplier. Regular pay is 40 × $20 = $800. Overtime is 6 hours × $20 × 1.5 = $180. Your total pay is $800 + $180 = $980.
Change the threshold or multiplier to match your rules — for example, some employers pay double time (2x) for holidays or hours beyond a second daily limit.
